BREAKING NEWS: Brewers add Trevor Hoffman
According to MLB.com, closer Trevor Hoffman will sign with the Brewers for a $6 million base salary in 2009, with incentives adding up to another $1.5 million.
Hoffman reprsents the sixth of seven probable relievers for the ’09 Brewers: Hoffman, David Riske, Jorge Julio, Todd Coffey, Mitch Stetter, and either Seth McClung or Carlos Villanueva.
Hoffman adds experience to the back end of the pen and will give a boost to the confidence of the entire pitching staff.

Wow. Good move by Brewers. Low cost, effective.
A gamble worth taking…certainly more of a known commodity than Gagné was last year.
The only fears that I have are 1) he doesn’t get too many save opportunities this year, and 2) when he takes the hill, the infield can back him up–he’s not a strike out pitcher, so his success will be due, in part, to the defense behind him.
A gamble worth taking? David, just one day before that didn’t you write “Please, PLEASE, do not sign Trevor Hoffman.”
Did your mind change in 24 hours or are you trying to look at the silver lining?
I’m trying to look at the silver lining. I don’t think that Hoffman is a bad closer, just not a good fit for the Brewers–he’s not a strikeout pitcher, meaning that his success is highly dependent upon the infield’s fielding abilities…plus, as a contact pitcher, he’s moving from one of the most pitcher friendly parks in the majors to a hitter’s park…plus he’s getting up there in age. I think Saito would have been better, economically, IF they had spent the $3 million or so they would have saved on a top notch starter.
