Brewers Trade for Vargas

July 31, 2009 1 comment

With Jarrod Washburn heading to Detroit this afternoon, the Brewers moved on to find another starter in a trade deadline deal.  In an attempt to just find a warm body to fill one of the holes in the rotation, the Brewers traded local favorite Vinny Rottino to the Los Angeles Dodgers for Claudio Vargas.

Vargas, of course, was a part of the Brewers’ rotation a couple years ago, and was released during spring training last year.  Vargas has found some success with the Dodgers in the bullpen this year, but has also spent a considerable amount of time on the disabled list.
It’s a bit of an uninspiring move, but you could make an argument that Vargas will likely perform better than anyone else the Brewers could call up from the minors, and he only cost a guy who the Brewers had no real plans for in the future.  It’s a trade that’s hard to like, but one that you can’t really hate, either.
It would’ve been nice to get a starter who doesn’t nibble his way through 5 innings like every other Brewers starter not named Yovani Gallardo, though.  We’ll see if Vargas ends up making a start this weekend in San Diego.  Earlier today, Mike Burns was officially recalled and is expected to make one of the open starts against the Padres.

For a lot of reasons, Lee may make more sense for the Brewers than Halladay…but will the cost be any less?
